Giving Tuesday, November 29, 2016
Following Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday we now have the opportunity to give!
Giving Tuesday is an opportunity to step back from the spending frenzy of the holiday weekend and consider those whose needs are met through the generosity of others.
When I served as a local minister I went through giving campaigns (generally referred to as “Capital Stewardship” campaigns). Most often the purpose was to raise money for new facilities or building upgrades. While these kinds of campaigns are needed, I’d like to suggest giving opportunities that are less focused on comfort and more focused on others.
I’ve heard people quote Malachi 3:10 as a motive for giving:
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this…and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it…
I’m not very comfortable with our use of this passage. First, I’m not certain that we can apply this passage directly to ourselves and secondly, I think Jesus provides us with a more powerful motivation in the Sermon on the Mount.
…I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. he causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends his rain on the righteous and the unrighteous…be perfect [or complete, whole], therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
And then Paul in 2 Corinthians 8:7-9
…see that you also excel in this grace of giving. I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity o your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich…
Giving is never about receiving. If I am seeking a blessing or a benefit from my giving then I’m missing something of the point, aren’t I? We are called to give because we are children of our Father and he gives extravagantly to everyone. We are disciples of Jesus who became poor for the benefit of others (Philippians 2 speaks of how he emptied himself and became a slave for our benefit). As disciples we are to become like our teacher–Jesus. As he gave up for others, we give up for others.
Naturally, I am going to promote Eastern European Mission because I believe in what we are doing: providing Bibles for those in Eastern Europe who want to know more about God: providing Bibles for public schools in Ukraine, Croatia, and Romania; providing Arabic, Farsi, and Urdu Bibles for refugees pouring into Greece, the Western parts of Eastern Europe, Austria and Germany.
I encourage you to find someone to give to. Whether it be EEM or some other non-profit. But give because you are the child of the great giving God. You are the sibling of the sacrificial Son of God, the Messiah.
Give because you can’t avoid giving–it’s your nature.
